The Daai Chin people are living in over 180 villages of the southern part of Chin State in Myanmar which is located at the western part of the countryside between India and Bangladesh. The Myanmar military was ruling us as colonial rule and they are trying to convert us from Christianity to Buddhist since 1960 to until today. These religious and political issues forced us to leave our relative homeland for seeking a UNHCR protection. Some Daai Chin people arrived in Malaysia in 2004 and they organized the Daai Community in Malaysia on 24 February 2008.
The purposes for organizing the Daai Community in Malaysia are: (1) To help new registration at UNHCR (2) To take care of hospital patients, especially to pregnant mothers and children (3) Meet with local authorities to maintain camps or prison officers for getting prisoners' situations such as health or other news to inform their relatives and families. (4) Dai Community School (Dai Victoria Education Center) for helping children who are losing their educational opportunities.
(1)The Daai Community has been running the Daai Victoria Childcare Centre to offer education and the children of Daai refugees and acknowledged by UNHCR since 2008. In the early times, the very young children were cared for and nurtured. Later on, the older ages of children come to the center for learning. We are still struggling to be consistent in dealing with all children, to meet their needs and requirements, especially in education. Currently, we have 30 students and using a flat that with two toilets, one kitchen room and one nave for teachers. The best part of the flat is used as a school without partitions beside around classes. It is cramped, noisy, and very hot. It is hard for schoolchildren to keep concentration on their lessons.
